Career Planning

Career planning is often left to the unemployed or those who hate their job.

Most of us know someone who is either extremely unhappy in their position, or who is unemployed.  It's often these individuals who sit down to actually plan out where they want to be, or to check their goals to see how close they are to accomplishing them.

Having a coach isn't a sign of weakness, it's a sign of maturity.

The best athletes, and executives for that matter, have all had a coach at one time or another; the very best have them continually.  This isn't a sign the person is incompetent, but rather they understand it takes someone else to help point them in the right direction.  Like swimming in the ocean, without someone to help guide the way, you'll just swim around in circles and wonder how close you are to reaching your shore.

Waiting to plan your career is like waiting until you're thirsty to drink.

Waiting until you're thirst to drink is a bad idea.  Studies have shown that if we do, we're actually in the beginning stages of dehydration, and our bodies aren't working correctly due to lack of water.  Similarly, if you wait until you’re dissatisfied with your job or until you're unemployed to really start making some career plans, then you're starting off behind.  Career planning is something you should do on a regular basis, much like financial planning, to make sure you achieve your goals.
